British Basketball Federation Statement

Statement from the British Basketball Federation:

The British Basketball Federation (BBF) has today confirmed the award of an interim licence to operate the men’s professional basketball league in Great Britain. The three-year licence has been awarded to Premier Basketball Limited, a company formed by a consortium of British clubs.

The previous agreement, with Basketball League Limited (BLL), was terminated by the BBF in June, on the basis of clear breaches of the licence and indications that BLL’s financial position would result in the company being unable to carry out its functions as operator of the league.

The award of an interim licence to Premier Basketball Limited enables preparations for the 2024/25 season to be completed and provides a stable basis for the consolidation of progress made in recent years.

Preparations are already underway for the scoping and invitation to interested parties to bid for a long-term licence, which will underpin the success and sustainable growth of British professional basketball in future years.

Chris Grant OBE, Chair of the British Basketball Federation said: “I’m delighted that fans, players, staff and partners can look forward with confidence to the continuation of top-level British club basketball. The fact that we’ve been able to move so quickly following the termination of the previous licence is down to the positivity and unity of the clubs, as well as the professionalism and focus of our BBF team and Board. The way we’ve worked together bodes well for the ongoing improvement and alignment of our player pathway so that the wealth of British basketball talent can translate to success on the international stage.”

More information about the league will be announced in the coming weeks including the 2024/25 fixtures list.

Plymouth City Patriots will continue to work with the other clubs and Premier Basketball Limited and will provide further information on how we will operate next season, in the near future.
